Chelsea consider Edinson Cavani transfer swoop after row with PSG team-mate Neymar
Chelsea are
reportedly among the clubs considering a surprise January transfer
window move for unsettled Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani.
The Uruguay international’s future at the Parc des Princes is in
serious doubt after a high-profile row with team-mate Neymar on the
pitch during the win over Lyon at the weekend.
Reports emerged yesterday that Neymar wants Cavani sold after the
dispute, which saw them come to blows on more than one occasion over who
should be on
set-piece duty.
PSG spent £199million on Neymar in the summer and the Brazilian is
now their undisputed star, with speculation growing that Cavani could be
offloaded as soon as the transfer window re-opens in the winter.

Chelsea are mentioned as being among his prime suitors, but Everton,
Juventus, Inter Milan, Napoli and Borussia Dortmund are also interested,
according to the
Danelite mediapress.
There are various complications over Cavani’s exit, however, with the
30-year-old looking to maintain a decent pay packet, play in the
Champions League and continue to be first choice up front.
The former Napoli hit-man would unlikely start every game for Chelsea
after the success of their summer signing Alvaro Morata, though Antonio
Conte has been keen to bring in another centre-forward to rotate with
the Spaniard.
This saw Chelsea linked strongly with Fernando Llorente towards the
end of the summer, but it is unlikely that Cavani would accept such a
role at this stage of his career.
The player is thought to be keen on a return to Italy after success
with both Napoli and Palermo earlier in his career, but would surely
have to take a significant cut to his £120,000 a week wages to do so.
PSG are looking to sell players this January, however, as they are
under pressure to adhere to Uefa’s Financial Fair Play regulations after
a summer of heavy spending.
Angel Di Maria, Julian Draxler and Lucas Moura are also among those
who could be on their way out, but Cavani’s row with Neymar now also
makes his departure a possibility.
The South American has been linked with Premier League clubs in the
past, but it remains to be seen if the likes of Arsenal and Manchester
United could revive an interest.
